4-Year-Old Cobee Cooks Found Dead Inside Closet

Police officers found Cobee on Monday evening while conducting a welfare check, according to the Atlanta Police Department. The APD officers arrived at 3507 Cardinal Drive SW with the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department at approximately 7:20 pm. The authorities reportedly forced entry to conduct the welfare check. Once inside, APD officers found the 4-year-old dead inside a bedroom closet underneath a pile of clothes. However, Cobee was pronounced deceased on the scene.

The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office said Cobee died of blunt force injuries. Furthermore, the 4-year-old’s death was ruled a homicide. The little boy reportedly died from multiple blunt force injuries — including a lacerated spleen and lacerated liver contusions to the diaphragm.

In addition, Cobee had lacerated contusions to his right kidney and at least 20 injuries in total — including broken bones and burns. Injuries were found on his head, face, ears, chest, legs, arm, and buttocks, according to 11 Alive News. Cobee had been dead for at least 12 to 24 hours when he was found, per Fox 5 Atlanta.

Two Women Arrested For Cobee’s Death

Two women were reportedly arrested in connection with Cobee’s death, per 11 Alive News. Jasmaine Smoak allegedly fled with Cobee’s brother and two other children. The 32-year-old had been taking care of the boys while their mother was incarcerated. Smoak’s father reportedly alerted 911 after his daughter called him, according to Fox 5 Atlanta. He said that Smoak called him and said a child was unresponsive after getting into some medication. Smoak and her friend, 30-year-old Jasmine Jenkins, allegedly left the children alone to go out on Sunday, October 25.
Before the authorities arrived for the welfare check, Smoak reportedly took off with Cobee’s 5-year-old brother, Kayden, and two 10-year-olds in a white Mercedes-Benz. Wilkes County deputies later found the vehicle located at a residence in Washington, Georgia, and Smoak was arrested. In addition, Kayden was found seriously injured with Smoak and rushed to the hospital in Augusta. He reportedly had bruising on his face and a laceration above his eye. In addition, Kayden was reportedly malnourished and is currently in critical condition. The two other children were recovered by the police.
Jenkins, who’d been staying with Smoak, was arrested on Thursday, October 29. Jenkins was charged as a party to the crime. The APD Fugitive Unit and the Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office reportedly located Jenkins, and she was taken into custody. She was charged with Murder and Cruelty to Children in the 1st Degree, per the police report. Smoak was charged with Cruelty to Children 2nd Degree, Concealing Death of Another, Murder, Aggravated Assault, and Cruelty to Children 1st Degree.

Georgia Department of Human Services Repeated Abuse

A friend of the family, Destyne Akoon, revealed that the children’s father and several others reported the alleged abuse to the Georgia Department of Human Services Division of Family and Children Services. Akoon claimed the abuse was reported to DFCS multiple times throughout 2025, per Fox 5 Atlanta. The complaints were reported to the agency in September, October, November, and December of 2025.

“It came from a friend of mine who reported to DFCS last year that the kids were being abused when we discovered the abuse,” said Akoon.

In addition, the boys’ father reportedly submitted an emergency referral mere days before the boys were found.

Cobee’s great-aunt Rachel shared a message on a GoFundMe page set up for the family.

“Our family received the heartbreaking news that my four-year-old great-nephew, Cobee Cooks, had tragically lost his life following horrific physical abuse,” it reads, in part. “His brother survived but suffered serious injuries and remains hospitalized, receiving medical care as he begins what may be a long road to physical and emotional recovery.”
